Emily Perkins is a New Zealand writer with an international reputation. Her early fiction chronicled the aimless and often bittersweet lives of twenty-somethings, and includes the short story collection, Not Her Real Name, and the novel Leave Before You Go. Perkins' latest work, Novel About My Wife, is a haunting and often sinister narrative about the death of a young woman. Winner of the 2009 Montana Medal for Fiction, it was described by the judges as a "highly assured fiction by a writer working at the height of her powers". Written after Perkins' return from several years in London, Novel About My Wife is both an utterly English novel, with resonances of Julian Barnes and Zadie Smith, and a quintessentially Antipodean take on expatriation and the modern city. In recent years Perkins has also been the host of the television arts programme The Good Word. See her in conversation with Caroline Baum.
