One of the world's most widely read historians, Simon Schama is University Professor of Art History and History at Columbia University. Schama has been described as a "scholar-artist [who]...marries jewel-like colouring of character, place and period with the iron grip of a strong pulsed narrative". Schama's work is marked by an energy and originality that has made him an instantly recognisable voice on the page and the television screen. His influential books include A History of Britain, Landscape and Memory, and Rough Crossings. His most recent work, The American Future: A History, is an innovative and engaging look at the history of the world's most powerful nation. His argument relies on "four abstract nouns - belligerence, fervour, ethnicity and plenty" and through them he creates a fascinating and unexpectedly optimistic vision of the last great empire. Join this charismatic scholar in conversation with Sean Plunket.
